Concussion Management Bedford - Coastal Sports And Wellness

What is a concussion?

concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that occurs when the brain is shaken or jolted inside the skull. This can happen due to a blow to the head or body, a fall, or any other impact that causes the head to move rapidly back and forth.

Symptoms of a concussion can include headache, dizziness, confusion, nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, sensitivity to light and noise, and difficulty concentrating or remembering things. In some cases, loss of consciousness may also occur, but this is not always the case.

What causes a concussion?

Concussions are usually caused by a sudden and forceful movement of the head, which causes the brain to move rapidly back and forth inside the skull. This movement can result from a direct blow to the head, such as during a fall, a car accident, or a sports-related injury. However, concussions can also occur without any direct impact to the head, such as when a person’s head and body are shaken violently, as in the case of whiplash.

Concussions can happen to anyone, but they are most common in people who participate in high-impact sports, such as football, hockey, or boxing. Military personnel, victims of physical abuse, and people who work in high-risk occupations, such as construction or mining, are also at increased risk for concussion.

Who is most at risk for a concussion?

Anyone can get a concussion, but some people are at higher risk than others. Some factors that can increase the risk of a concussion include:

Participating in high-impact sports: Contact sports such as football, hockey, rugby, and boxing put athletes at higher risk of concussion due to the potential for blows to the head.

Having a history of concussions: People who have had one or more previous concussions are more likely to have another.

Being female: Studies have shown that females are at higher risk of concussion than males, particularly in sports such as soccer and basketball.

Being young: Children and adolescents are more vulnerable to concussion than adults because their brains are still developing and are more susceptible to injury.

What are the symptoms of a concussion?

The symptoms of a concussion can vary depending on the individual and the severity of the injury. Some common symptoms of a concussion include:

  1. Headache or pressure in the head
  2. Dizziness or feeling lightheaded
  3. Confusion or feeling mentally foggy
  4. Blurred vision or seeing stars
  5. Ringing in the ears or hearing loss

It’s important to note that the symptoms of a concussion may not appear immediately after the injury and may take several hours or days to develop. In some cases, the symptoms may be subtle and not immediately noticeable. If you suspect that you or someone else has a concussion, it’s essential to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
